Advocacy

Virginia Anti-Bullying and Discrimination Action Network logo

Education, School Access, and Anti-Bullying

I am a co-founder of the Virginia Anti-Bullying and Discrimination Action Network (VABADAN). We support families, connect parents with resources, and work toward solutions to the culture and systemic issues that allow bullying and discrimination to persist.

My work includes special-education access, IEP and 504 supports, school transportation, inclusion, and organizing with families to bring shared concerns to school boards. Children deserve the support to learn and participate safely.

Need an educational advocate? Reach out to me at info@merarose.live.

Mera with her family at the disability caucus award celebration

Recognition from the DPVA Disability Caucus

In July 2018, I was honored with an advocacy award from the Disability Caucus of the Democratic Party of Virginia. Having my family with me made that recognition especially meaningful.

Independent Living, Healthcare, and Continuity of Care

Disability supports should make it possible to live a life in the community, with autonomy, reliable care, and real choices. My advocacy brings together Medicaid and DD waiver access, personal-care services, accessible housing, supported decision-making, and recognition of paid family caregivers.

This includes calls to fund Virginia’s Priority One DD waiver waiting list, address attendant shortages, and reduce administrative barriers such as live-in Electronic Visit Verification requirements. Consumer input, workable correction processes, and timely payment are essential to continuity of care.

Autism Awareness, Acceptance, and Community Engagement

Over the years, I have spoken about autism awareness, acceptance, and community engagement with BRILC (Blue Ridge Independent Living Center), ADAPT, and ASAN (Autistic Self Advocacy Network). The focus is dignity, autonomy, listening to disabled people, and fuller participation in community life.

My work also includes Blue Love and Light It Up Blue activities, awareness jewelry through Mera Rose Creations, family resource sharing, and community education.

Accessible Costuming, HalloWheels, and Fundraising

Accessible Costuming, HalloWheels, and Fundraising

The IronFoam Throne raised $5,000 for Special Olympics of Georgia at the Dragon Con Costuming Exhibit in 2017. Creative work can make room for participation and support causes that matter.

Iron Throne photo-op fundraising at Big Lick ComicCon also supported Children’s Assistive Technology Service and HalloWheels. Accessible Halloween experiences, mobility-aware costume design, and inclusion in convention spaces connect my creative work and advocacy.

Legislative Advocacy and Equality

I submitted a proposal supporting transgender children to the DPVA at the CD6 convention. My advocacy includes protections for LGBTQIA+ young people, fair treatment in education, and bringing family and community experience into policy discussions.

Healthcare and education organizing, public comments, letters to representatives, voter participation, and the March for Equality and Capitol Pride are part of that work.

Virginia Continuity of Care Act — draft proposal

A proposal centered on consumer choice, public participation, independent review, and continuity before major program changes.

DOCTOR Act — draft proposal

Delivering Optimal Care Through Operational Responsibility: a developing federal healthcare proposal exploring universal access, public accountability, and cost-conscious administration.

These proposals are advocacy drafts, not enacted laws.

Community Networks and Public Action

Supporting disability-rights calls to action, sharing resources from The Arc of Virginia, and participating in community discussions through the Virginia Autism Project. My work includes town-hall talking points, correspondence, and public comments about care access and implementation barriers.

Organization, Retention, Access, Continuity, Logistics, and Empowerment Systems

An app in development to help individuals and families organize documents, tasks, care coordination, personal history, and family knowledge in one accessible place. Designed to support everyday continuity and preserve the information that holds a life together.

Virginia HCBS Public Comment | General Notice 3470

I oppose all eight proposed changes to Virginia’s CL, FIS and CCC+ Medicaid waivers because of the risks to individualized care, consumer choice, family caregivers, community integration and continuity of delivered services. I also request a separate public-comment process for live-in EVV and at least six months for responsible implementation following that review.

The Calamaties and Consequences of the Western Wilds

By Coyote Kate Williams · Fiction · In development

The Wild West has its legends. Coyote Kate Williams has her own version—and she has the fangs to outlive anyone who disputes it. Set in the era of Billy the Kid, this collection of fictional short stories follows a vampire through a frontier where a quick draw is useful, a quick wit is essential, and surviving until morning is a matter of perspective.

Told in Kate’s own first-person voice, these tales invite you to pull up a chair and hear the Western Wilds from a woman with a long memory, a sharp tongue, and a distinctly unusual appetite.

PantheCon.org

An unconventional—and unofficial—archive of Dragon Con culture. PantheCon gathers the origins, stories, people, photographs, and artifacts behind the Cults of Dragon Con. Here, “cult” is short for culture: the shared jokes and traditions that become part of convention life.

I co-founded the Unified Church of the Dragons to help record those histories and promote unity. My participation also includes the Marriott Carpet Cheerleaders and Marriott Carpet Marching Band and Color Guard, along with speaking about Dragon Con’s community traditions.

Hello, I’m Mera

Making things. Asking questions. Showing up.

Maker, advocate, and part of the convention community.

My creative work includes costumes, sets, and props through Prop House 42. My advocacy focuses on inclusion, anti-bullying, school access, and community participation.

They may look like different paths, but both ask a similar question: what can we make possible together?
